Salary to hourly: how the formula works
The calculator uses monthly salary and weekly hours to estimate an hourly rate. The formula is: hourly = (monthly salary × 12) ÷ (weekly hours × 52). Monthly × 12 gives annual salary; weekly hours × 52 gives annual hours. The result is gross — before income tax, social insurance and pension contributions. Take-home pay is typically 60–75% of gross depending on country and income level.
The 52-week denominator is correct — a common mistake is using 4 weeks per month (48 weeks per year), which overstates the hourly rate by about 8.7%.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the hourly rate estimate gross or net?
Gross — before any deductions. To get a net estimate, use your actual monthly take-home pay instead of your gross salary. In most EU countries, net pay on a €3,500 gross monthly salary is approximately €2,200–€2,600 depending on personal deductions and tax bracket.
Why use 52 weeks per year rather than 4 weeks per month?
1 month = 4.33 weeks on average, not exactly 4. Using 4 weeks per month gives 48 working weeks per year, understating annual hours by 8.7% and overstating the hourly rate by the same amount. The correct formula multiplies weekly hours by 52 to get accurate annual hours.
How do I compare a freelance day rate to a salary?
A €3,500/month salary at 40 hours/week equals €20.19/hour or €161.50/day. A freelance day rate needs to cover employer-side taxes, unbillable time, sick days and equipment — typically adding 30–40% overhead. A €200/day freelance rate approximates a €3,500/month employed salary after overhead.
